Crescendo building in legal fight over fancy fiddle | The Scoop Blog

In court papers filed late Friday afternoon, a Mesquite widow claims Dallas Symphony Orchestra violinist Filip Fenrych and his wife, Julia Bushkova, preyed on her grief last spring when they convinced her to sell a rare Scarampella violin for less than half what it?s worth.

The petition was filed in Dallas County?s 68th District Court.

?This is a case about the greed of a young violinist, Filip Fenrych, tempted by the possibility that he could own a rare 1910 Scarampella violin for a fraction of its true value, and his efforts to get it, aided by his famous violinist wife, Professor Julia Bushkova,? according to papers filed on behalf of Tara Moore, whose husband Ronald Hudson was a violin collector and co-concertmaster for the symphony.

Fenrych has previously declined to comment. But in January court papers he asked a judge to uphold his sales contract of $47,000, prevent Moore from demanding any more money and order her to pay his attorneys? fees. The instrument is worth at least $90,000.
Fenrych?s wife, Bushkova, could not be reached for comment Friday night.

The petition says the violinists conspired against Moore and manipulated her lack of knowledge about the value of her husband?s collection.

?To be sure, Fenrych was not working alone in his endeavor to find a fine violin to match with his talent at a bargain price. He enlisted the invaluable advice of his principle violin teacher, Julia Bushkova? (who) was born into a family of renowned violinists in Moscow, Russia, and began studying the violin at age five,? according to court papers. ?She made her concert debut at age fifteen and graduated from the world famous Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, and then began playing concerts all over the world, publicly acclaimed as a ?virtuoso of high rank.?

Bushkova is a Professor of Violin at the University of North Texas.
In previous court papers, Fenrych called Moore?s allegations ?scurrilous.?

He said Moore sold him the century-old Italian-made instrument at a reduced price last March because she could not prove its authenticity. When she later found paperwork establishing the instrument?s lineage, Fenrych refused to honor her original asking price of $90,000.

Expect this story to build toward a crescendo next week in The Dallas Morning News.
