Music making apps for the iPad are ten-a-penny, but when it's the brainchild of a super-producer like Brian Eno, you have to take notice. Scape is the third of his collaborations with Peter Chilvers after Bloom and Trope, an app that lets you generate ambient music with Eno's own sounds on a colorful, conceptual interface. Unlike standard beats'n'loops setups, each sound is tied to a series of rules -- including the time of day -- that ensures the tunes you create never play the same way twice. It's available from iTunes for $5.99 / £3.99, and who knows, maybe in a few years time, Coldplay'll come calling for your professional expertise.

In this article from 2009, a duh makes the claim that those of us without children are inefficient and don't value our free time.
Quote
If you don't have kids, you don't have a time problem.
I have friends without kids and I want to wring their neck every time they say, "I'm so busy. I don't have enough time." You don't have enough time?! Are you kidding me? My theory, which seems to be much more popular with my friends that have children, is that people without kids are inefficient and don't fully value their free time.
Quote
Common sense says that if you have children, you will not be as productive. There's no way you will be able to get as much done. That book you want to write? It will take a lot longer. Time for exercise? Limited. People without kids have so much more free time that it's almost unfathomable.
So if common sense is accurate, why aren't people without kids so much more successful and productive? Fortunately, they waste their time and are inefficient. Too harsh? I'm speaking from personal experience.
The comments all appear to be from childfree people, so of course he gets what he deserves.
I, for one, enjoy my downtime and doubt I could be busy doing productive things all the time without suffering a breakdown. Relaxation time is something I've built into my life. I somehow also find the time for taking evening classes and other forms of self-improvement. Still, there isn't enough time - not because I "waste" it, but because there are so many things that I want to do, and even if I could go without sleep I wouldn't have time to do it all.
I don't need advice on how to live my life from Mr. Breeder:
Quote
Don't think you waste your time? Track it for a day or a week. If you really want to get depressed, have a friend with a child track his time and compare the results.
If you don't have kids you have all the time in the world. Go forth and use it. Let me know what you do with it. In the meantime, I'll be at Disneyland...
We are more productive and successful. He is probably too busy leaving work early for soccer and ballet to notice.

So, Mr. Dad wants me to track my time and compare it to his in some pissing contest over what constitutes "busy" and "time efficiency"? Could I get him a huge bucket of Don't Give A Fuck? I am not getting paid by him, so what I do with my time is none of his damn business. if I want to sit around watching a Deadly Women marathon on ID all day, I don't care if he thinks I am "using my time inefficiently". In fact, chances are his CF friends all claim that they are busy because they would rather sear their retinas with a wood burning tool than spend any time around a smug, judgmental ass fuck.

The major failure of this idea is that the concepts of what activities constitute a "Waste of Time" versus "A Productive Use of Time" versus "An It Had to be Done at Some Point Use of Time" versus "A Valuable Use of Time" are entirely subjective and will be completely different from person to person.
In addition the concepts of what results constitute a "Valuable/Worthwhile Product" of "Efficiently and Productively/Valuably Used Time" are going to be completely different depending on person and situation.
wait, so he'll be at disneyland..... now THAT'S a productive use of time....
In the mean time, I'll be roofing my house. He can shove it.

Most of his activities are things involved with raising his kids. How is that productive? Maybe productive for his kid's lives, but destructive for the rest of the world because of his unneeded resource suckers.
What he's trying to do is attach "meaning" to his free time. He does this and this and this while away from his kids because he thinks he has to make the most of his time when he's not being interupted by his kids. Then he has time to go to Disney World with his kids. CF people can do this and this and this whenever they want and still go to Disney World and have a good time without worrying about what the screaming brats want.
Since he has kids, pretty much everything he does from now on can be considered "destructive" and not "productive." He's productive in about the same sense as purposely spilling a glass of water on your floor just so you can spend time moping it.

Fuck you gently with a chainsaw Mr Breeder.
I have to type quickly here because I'm headed into work. Oh, and as an aside? Yeah, I'm free to pick up extra shifts for my coworkers because I'm CF. My coworker is taking care of her sick mother so I'm covering for her. Last night I covered for a coworker who was herself sick. So is working at my job and being available to help others a waste of time?
People spend their time working, training for marathons, crafting, volunteering, and jerking off. That is their own fucking business and not yours. You chose to breed and thus created an enterprise that requires time. Believe me, I look at lazy moos pushing their strollers around town and sipping lattes as having all the free time in the world since they're not working or doing anything for anyone else.
I do NOT have free time, I simply have time not spent raising loaves. And what the fuck do you do that's so valuable? Give your kids time outs and abuse their sports coaches?
And as much as we love to get excited over CFC celebrities and achievers, most people have kids. Great athletes, heads of state, teachers, artists, community volunteers, business leaders, and musicians all have kids and manage to contribute to the world. You just use your loaves as an excuse for being a loser.
"If you don't have kids, you don't have a time problem."
Unless, for example, some LOSER WITH BRATS IS SLOWING DOWN THE GROCIERY LINE.
He's a DUH all right. DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Yer welcome to it! ENJOY THE SCREAMING.
Quote cfinboston You chose to breed and thus created an enterprise that requires time.
I second this. How many times do we have to tell that these are CHOICES? It was his choice to have kids and he should have realized that it requires time. Now that he probably doesn't have it, he starts attacking the CF. Well, typical attitude of a jealous breeder.
And if we don't have kids that doesn't mean we have all the free time in the world. I do have to hold a part-time job, to work on my new degree, i take other courses than my university ones, i am taking my car driver's licence, i put some time into sports also, i do volunteering, not to mention the domestic chores and errands.
That he chose to fill up his time with kids is his business and he should STFU.

I can choose what to do with my free time and I most certainly value it. I treasure any kind of freedom more than anything. I may do something productive, or not. I have the whole day today, let's seee.....Who cares? Duh is OCD or some shit.

His whole message oozes envy and resentment.
And I'm quite certain he didn't spend time worrying about "wasting" his free time until he had kids. Then he realized he didn't get any, and is wistfully thinking back to when he had time to sleep in (or just SLEEP, period), work out, have sex, do creative projects...all gone now. So he patched things up by deciding that "productivity" is important for free time.
No one cares what he thinks. No one cares what he does. No one cares about the disgusting mediocrities he is raising.
Child rearing is busy-making work.
People do it to climb social ladders, gain status, feel important, and have people under their thumb for a couple of decades. People to extract love and attention from, often by guilt making and mental manipulation. And probably people to wipe old, wrinkly asses out of obligation and mind-fuckery.
This piece of shit, perfectly inconsequential, duhd wants to be relevant in this world. Instead of doing it with real achievement, he wipes noses and carries stale fries around.
Don't use us to feel relevant and important. You are neither.
Ugh. My friend told me last night that she can't stay out late for a friend's birthday party - on a Saturday night - because she has SO MUCH GOING ON! She is a SAHM with one kyd in preschool, a maid, grocery delivery, and a filthy-rich husband. You know what she has GOING ON? Getting her precious little Bratleigh into the "right" Manhattan kindergarten. That's it. She still has time for a run AND a yoga class every day, plus hanging out with her other rich SAHMs for play dates that include a bottle of wine each.
For the record, no matter what she says, this woman will get totally shitfaced and will be surreptitiously snorting controlled substances in the bathroom before the meal is over. It's almost too cliched for words.

Oh please! Who is more inefficient with their time than SAHMoos? They have all the damn time in the world, and yet they can't do anything worthwhile.I waste my free time? Fuck you. I go to school for 15 hours every week. I go to work for 20-30 hours per week. I have time aside for homework, time for housework, and time to get places. I use my time riding the bus for homework and checking up on things. Not a minute of my time is wasted but by other people.

I am (not) sorry (at all) but if I want to spend time gazing at the horizon longingly and I consider it a valuable use of my time, who is this man to say it is not so? After I have worked, and done my house chore, what I like to do is my business, duh.

Is he jealous that we have time to relax if we so desire? Relaxing is not a waste of time. It helps to revive you so that you can put more energy and creativity in to the "busy" parts of your life.

I gave away my last fuck a while ago. Nobody cares what you think, Duh. You obviously regret your life choices and now you attack anyone that was smart enough not to make the same mistake you did. Too bad, so sad. There was only five comments on that POS but all of them tear the "writer" a new asshole.Sounds like a typical breeder - "My time is far more important because I have kiiiiiiiids!"
On the contrary, CFers do value their free time, which is probably one of the reasons most of us are CF to begin with. We like being able to do what we like in our free time without having to make arrangements for child care or have what we do revolve around kids in some way.
Even then, who cares what anyone does in their spare time? Unless is pisses me off or causes me or someone else harm in some way, I don't care if someone is spending their free time trying to cure AIDS, hack into government files or sitting in front of the TV watching game shows and jerking off. Just because someone has a few brats doesn't mean their free time is more valuable - many parents are lazy slobs who don't work (or if they do, they're fucking lazy at work too but expect the same pay as the people who actually WORK). Not to mention this is a guy - a vast majority of fathers don't do shit in terms of raising their own kids. What's this asshole doing that's so important?
He cares so damn much about what unchilded people are doing because he wishes he could do it too. It's not a lack of free time - it's just he can't go back to college or build something or paint something without interruption from the kids he CHOSE to have. In short, jealousy and regret.
That doesn't make any damn sense. We ARE more successful and more productive, because we're doing REAL things, like working full time jobs, going to school, volunteering, you know, being a productive member of society. And all the mindless mombies and duh's are cleaning shit and sorting cheerios into little baggies. I would say that I get about ten more things done in MY day than any moo or duh, because I actually have more time to do them! See, your logic is...ehh let's just call it like it is, your poor attempt at masking your seething jealousy isn't working.

Standardized tests assume that children come standardized, which they don?t. Not only is there a huge developmental span between children in the same grade, but it?s normal and healthyfor there to be a span. They aren?t factory widgets, folks, they are developing humans.
Teachers and administrators hate (if they are honest with themselves) the tests. They know every one of the points in this list. If professional educators don?t like the tests, perhaps they aren?t the best tools for educators to use.
These tests cause a great deal of anxiety in children. It is abusive to force kids to sit for hours filling in the little oval bubbles in high-stakes tests. Often, children are not allowed to go to the bathroom while testing. The atmosphere of the classroom becomes oppressive, which is contrary to best teaching practices.
These tests cause anxiety in teachers, party because they know they are judged by their students? scores, and partially because the tests interfere with teaching. This is an important point: State tests take about a week out of the time teachers have to deliver the curriculum. More tests means less learning.
Tests are causing teachers to teach superficially. Instead of the critical thinking skills that come from investigating something in depth, children are taught to quickly answer questions phrased in test language.
These tests are not good assessments of student learning. They are, by their nature, unauthentic. Take math for example. Do we teach math so that kids will know math, or do we teach math so that kids will have math as a tool to solve problems in life? If the latter is the goal, students should be tested by seeing if they can comparison shop, not if they can compare the angles of geometric shapes.
State tests send a bad message to our children. We should be modeling integrity, standing up for our beliefs. Instead, we are presenting children with the following subtext: We don?t believe in what we are doing but the people in charge tell us to do it so we will follow along like sheep. (I apologize to any sheep who may be reading this.)
The time frame is wack. It takes so long to get the results that these tests can?t be used to inform teaching in the moment. They can only be used to help the next crop of kids do better on tests.
The tests are at variance with Special Education law (IDEA) by forcing students with disabilities to take the same tests as other students.
More and more, standardized tests scores are used to judge and even force teachers out of the profession. Since the tests don?t measure student learning, we may be losing teachers who are good for our kids.
My fear is that our schools are being transformed into testing factories. We will have generation of kids who are really great at taking standardized tests. This won?t help them in life, unless they choose ?Test Tutor? as a profession. Would you like more arguments against standardized testing? LONDON (AP) ? Britain's Health Protection Agency has published an early genetic sequence of the new respiratory virus related to SARS that shows it is most closely linked to bat viruses, and scientists say camels, sheep or goats might end up being implicated too.
So far, officials have only identified two confirmed cases and say the virus isn't as infectious as SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, which killed hundreds of people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 global outbreak.
In Geneva, World Health Organization spokesman Glenn Thomas told reporters Friday that so far the signs are that the virus is "not easily transmitted from person to person" ? but analyses are ongoing. The agency said it's too early to tell how big a threat the new virus will be since it is unknown how exactly it spreads and whether it will evolve into a more dangerous form.
Global health officials suspect two victims from the Middle East may have caught it from animals.
"It's a logical possibility to consider any animals present in the region in large numbers," said Ralph Baric, a coronavirus expert at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Biologists now need to go into the area and take samples from any animals they can get their hands on, including camels and goats," he said. Baric said it was crucial to find out how widespread the virus is in animals and what kind of contact might be risky for people.
Baric suggested bats might be spreading the virus directly to humans since the two confirmed infections happened months apart. "If there was an established transmission pattern from other animals, we probably would have seen a lot more cases," he said.
WHO said it is considering the possibility the new coronavirus sickened humans after direct contact with animals. The agency is now working with experts in the Middle East to figure out how the two confirmed cases got infected but could not share details until the investigation was finished.
One patient was a Saudi Arabian man who died several months ago while the other is a Qatari national who traveled to Saudi Arabia before falling ill and is currently in critical but stable condition in a London hospital.
Earlier this week, WHO issued a global alert asking doctors to be on guard for any potential cases of the new respiratory virus, which also causes kidney failure.
Saudi officials have already warned that next month's annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage, which brings millions to Saudi Arabia from all around the world, could allow the virus to spread. As a precautionary measure, they are advising pilgrims to keep their hands clean and wear masks in crowded places.
Experts said knowing where a virus comes from provides clues on how to stop it.
"This means we could prevent the fire before it starts instead of rushing towards it with fire trucks and water hoses afterwards," said Michael Osterholm, an infectious diseases expert at the University of Minnesota.
Osterholm said it was possible bats had simply passed on the virus from other animals and that there could be a complicated transmission chain that ultimately ended in humans.
Viruses reproduce as they infect animals and people, giving them more chances to evolve into a deadlier version.
"We don't know enough about coronaviruses to predict which mutations might make them more lethal or transmissible," Osterholm said. "But you don't want to tempt genetic fate with microbes because you're bound to lose most times."

(Reuters) - Groupon Inc, the world's largest online daily deals provider, is reshuffling senior management roles in an attempt to fix its struggling European business -- a shake-up that will also include the departure of its chief of international business.
According to an internal memo obtained by Reuters, Chris Muhr, SVP of sales, will now head the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, while Veit Dengler, SVP International, will be leaving the company.
The memo did not give any reason for Dengler's departure. He will be the latest in a slew of executives, including Lee Brown, who oversees national sales, who have left or decided to leave Groupon in recent months.
Fixing its European operations has become an imperative for Groupon after the second-quarter revealed big problems with that business, driving the company's already weak share price even lower.
In addition to the euro zone's sovereign debt crisis and economic slowdown, Groupon offered discounts that were too big, annoying some merchants in the region.
Groupon, one of a crop of consumer Internet companies that debuted on markets with much fanfare in late 2011, has lost more than three quarters of its market value since its initial public offering at $20 with CEO Andrew Mason, a music graduate, pummeled with questions about its ability to sustain revenue growth.
The stock now trades at $4.78.
Muhr hails from Citydeal, a company acquired by Groupon in 2010 as its entry into international markets. Along with Citydeal co-founders Emanuel Stehle, Jens Hutzschenreuter and Rajen Ruparell, he had moved to North America to improve sales in its domestic market ahead of Groupon's IPO.
"We've made great progress in the last few months, but we still have a lot of work to do, particularly in Europe," Groupon's operations chief Kal Raman said in the internal memo.
"While our challenges in Europe are no secret, after spending two weeks there, I am energized by the great team and clear opportunities to improve," he said.

(Reuters) - A federal judge has again dismissed a lawsuit accusing Freddie Mac of misleading shareholders by understating its subprime mortgage exposure and overstating its capital strength ahead of the 2008 financial crisis.
U.S. District Judge John Keenan in Manhattan said the allegations made in an amended lawsuit failed to show that Freddie Mac officials, including former Chief Executive Richard Syron, intended to mislead shareholders, or withheld significant information from them.
He also said Freddie Mac had made a "bevy of truthful disclosures" about its credit and risk exposures during the period covered by the lawsuit, including over loans it guaranteed and its activities in nontraditional markets.
"It defies logic to conclude that executives who are seeking to perpetrate fraudulent information upon the market would make such fulsome disclosures," Keenan wrote.
Shareholders led by the Illinois-based Central States, Southeast and Southwest Areas Pension Fund had accused Freddie Mac of hiding its risks after revealing a $2 billion quarterly loss on November 20, 2007.
The lawsuit covers losses by investors in Freddie Mac common and preferred shares from that date until September 7, 2008, when U.S. regulators seized Freddie Mac and larger rival Fannie Mae and put them in a conservatorship under the Federal Housing Finance Agency.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Keenan had in March 2011 dismissed an earlier version of the lawsuit, which was first filed in August 2008, but given the plaintiffs a chance to amend their complaint. He refused on Wednesday to give them another chance.
The shareholder lawsuit is separate from a civil fraud lawsuit that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has been pursuing against Syron and other former Freddie Mac officials. Defendants in that case have denied wrongdoing.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The presidential election is Nov. 6, but it could take days to figure out the winner if the vote is close. New voting laws are likely to increase the number of people who have to cast provisional ballots in key states.
Tight races for Congress, governor and local offices also could be stuck in limbo while election officials scrutinize ballots, a scenario that would surely attract legions of campaign lawyers from both parties.
"It's a possibility of a complete meltdown for the election," said Daniel Smith, a political scientist at the University of Florida.
Voters cast provisional ballots for a variety of reasons: They don't bring proper ID to the polls; they fail to update their voter registration after moving; they try to vote at the wrong precinct; or their right to vote is challenged by someone.
These voters may have their votes counted, but only if election officials can verify that they were eligible to vote, a process that can take days or weeks. Adding to the potential for chaos: Many states won't even know how many provisional ballots have been cast until sometime after Election Day.
Voters cast nearly 2.1 million provisional ballots in the 2008 presidential election. About 69 percent were eventually counted, according to election results compiled by The Associated Press.
New election laws in competitive states like Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin will probably increase the number of provisional ballots in those states this year, according to voting experts, although the new laws in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania are being challenged in court.
New voter ID laws in states like Kansas, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee could affect state or local elections, though some of those laws also are being challenged.
Provisional ballots don't get much attention if an election is a landslide. But what if the vote is close, as the polls suggest in the race between President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney?
Most of today's voting nightmares go back to Florida in 2000, when the results of balloting and thus the winner of the presidential contest were not known for weeks after Election Day. Questions about recount irregularities and the validity of ballots with hanging chads ? paper fragments still attached to punch-card ballots ? preceded the eventual declaration that George W. Bush had won the state by 537 votes and was the next president.
"In a close election, all eyes are going to be on those provisional ballots, and those same canvassing boards that were looking at pregnant chads and hanging chads back in 2000," Smith said. "It's a potential mess."
The federal election law passed in response to the 2000 presidential election gives voters the option to cast a provisional ballot, if poll workers deny them a regular one. New voter ID laws could slow the count even more.
In Virginia and Wisconsin, voters who don't bring an ID to the polls can still have their votes counted if they produce an ID by the Friday following Election Day. Pennsylvania's law gives voters six days to produce an ID.
In Ohio, which has competitive races for both president and the Senate, provisional voters have up to 10 days following the election to bring an ID to the county board of elections.
If voters in Florida don't bring an ID to the polls, they must sign a provisional ballot envelope. Canvassing boards then will try to match the signatures with those in voter registration records, a process that conjures up images of the 2000 presidential election in Florida.
"Americans have gotten used to the expectation that you could turn on the TV and you would know that night who won the election, even after Florida in 2000," said Edward B. Foley, a law professor at Ohio State University. "But this could be an election in which we don't know the answer for several days."
Florida could see a big increase in provisional ballots because the state has tightened its change-of-address requirements. This year, voters who move from one county to another in Florida without updating their voter registration will have to cast provisional ballots. In previous elections, they could change their address on Election Day and cast a regular ballot.
Four years ago, Florida voters cast about 36,000 provisional ballots. About half of them were eventually counted, though the percentages varied greatly from county to county.
This year, Florida could have 300,000 provisional ballots, said Michael McDonald, an election expert at George Mason University.
"You want to see chaos in Florida? There it is," McDonald said.
In Ohio, address changes were the biggest reason voters cast provisional ballots in 2008, said Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted. Ohio voters cast about 207,000 provisional ballots in the 2008 presidential election ? second only to California. About 130,000 of them were cast because voters moved and didn't update their voter registration, Husted said.
In 2004, the number of provisional ballots cast in Ohio was larger than President George W. Bush's margin of victory over Democrat John Kerry. Kerry didn't concede until the following morning, when the provisional ballot picture became clear.
In 2008, the number of provisional ballots cast in North Carolina was larger than Obama's margin of victory over Republican John McCain. The Associated Press didn't declare the state for Obama until the day after Election Day, though Obama had already won enough states to claim the presidency.
Husted said his office is trying to reduce the number of provisional ballots in Ohio by using change-of-address information from the Postal Service to send out more than 300,000 postcards to Ohio voters, reminding them to update their registration.
"If we can potentially reduce the number of ballots cast provisionally, then you lessen the likelihood that there will have to be a prolonged process as it relates to those ballots," Husted said. "Understand, a provisional ballot is a second chance because you didn't do it right the first time, meaning that you didn't update your address, you didn't bring in the proper form of ID, there's something that the voter didn't do at the onset that prevented them from voting a regular ballot."
